Year-Round Academic English Courses

Academic English

Our year-round Academic English Course is designed for students who need to develop their ability in English language use for academic contexts. The course prepares students for the various language demands and assignments which will be a feature of academic study. The core components of the course are: academic reading comprehension, essays and academic writing, listening comprehension and note-taking (lecture-style), oral presentations and seminar practice, research and referencing, grammar and vocabulary for academic use, time management, critical thinking and learner autonomy. The course is delivered in partnership with UCD Applied Language Centre.

Students can choose to study for 25 weeks or a single term (10 weeks for Spring and Winter terms, or 15 weeks for the Autumn term). The specific start dates are as follows:

  • Summer Term 2020: 15 June - 11 December (25 weeks)
  • Autumn Term 2020: 31 August - 11 December (15 weeks) or 31 August - 20 March 2021 (25 weeks)
  • Winter Term 2021: 11 January - 19 March (10 weeks) or 11 January - 16 July (25 weeks)
  • Spring Term 2021: 29 March - 14 June (10 weeks) or 29 March - 1 October

Academic English + IELTS

In addition to the Academic Englsh course, students can take 4 hours per week of IELTS Exam Preparation in the afternoons. Our IELTS Preparation Course offers students the opportunity to study in Ireland's most established IELTS Exam Centre, with experienced IELTS specialists.

Every week, topic-based classes will focus on each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Through exam-based practice activities and focused feedback, students will gain a clear understanding of how to improve exam performance and achieve target results. The course is delivered in partnership with UCD Applied Language Centre.

Homestay Accommodation

Students can optimise their spoken English within a short timeframe, by staying with a host family. Accommodation in homestays is arranged year-round, with carefully selected host families. All host families are within close proximity to the campus and to easy, accessible commuting links. Breakfast and dinner will be provided during the week. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided at the weekends.
